Development for safety-critical systems with CENELEC SIL 4 presents many challenges for processes, team organization and test strategies. The reason for this is that time and costs for testing and verification are often underestimated.
In the newest issue of the German electronic journal ELEKTRONIKPRAXIS, Hitex safety expert Michael Weiß describes a real-world development project for safety-critical railway signaling systems with EN 5012x / SIL 4.
The project shows which challenges can come up during SIL 4 development and how the microcontroller selection defines the successful completion of the safety control system. Two AURIX™ microcontrollers were chosen for their multilayer safety architecture and relevant safety certifications, keeping each other in check.
